World Meteorology Day

World Meteorology Day for 2015 has adopted the theme “Measurements and Light”. World Meteorology Day is held on the 20th May each year and marks the signature of the Meter Convention by 17 nations in Paris in 1875. The Meter Convention now has 56 Member States and 41 Associate States, all of which use World Meteorology Day as a focus for promoting the importance of measurement.
Meteorology plays a central role in enabling the application of light-based technologies and consequently the national growth, for example:
- As new forms of efficient lighting are developed new measurements are needed to quantify their efficiency and the influence they have on the appearance of objects,
- Decisions to invest in solar photovoltaic technologies are based on accurate data for their efficiency and lifetime,
- Direct measurements of the sun made from satellites are essential to underpin our understanding of solar radiance and its contribution to climate change.
In turn, light and Meteorology are at the heart of many of the most important new elements of leading-edge measurement technologies for the national growth of any economy.
We recognize that the increasing importance of meteorology within globalized markets puts more emphasis on the link between costs and quality, quality and trade, measurements and quality control, and on issues of calibration, laboratory accreditation, traceability and certification. Meteorology is the most basic system of trading and provides businesses and organizations with the ability to carry out transactions that deal with lengths, mass, volumes, time, temperature, and so on.
Without the use of meteorology, even the simplest of transactions may be open to abuse as it then becomes difficult to regulate trade.
Undoubtedly, a national measurement or meteorology system is the first step in facilitating trade in any economy. This covers the three areas of scientific meteorology, industrial meteorology and legal meteorology.
